Whose Round is it Anyway?

Fancy a pint? Come join the ‘Geordie gadgies’ in this humorous, quirky and poignant depiction of life as a working man and the demise of the shipyards.

“It was visually striking with moments of real beauty” – Hannah Graham, Chroniclelive.co.uk 2016

“Warm and touching, raw yet amusing, this show was a rarity in contemporary dance”  – Carla Melaco, Cuckoo Review 2016

This piece is an excerpt from a 50-min work – Launch Day, which toured theatres in the North East in 2016, supported by Arts Council England and co-commissioned by Dance City/ Queens Hall Hexham. Inspired by the paintings of Alexander Millar and informed by research with former shipyard workers; the choreography takes Millar’s iconic characters known as ‘gadgies’ and brings them to life on stage. A celebration of the industrial heritage of the North East, this piece displays large-scale projections of Millar’s paintings, a soundtrack featuring music by Mark Knopfler and an original score by Irish composer Breifne Holohan.
